Alice 101 was photographed during the
last three months of 2002 and written in January and March of 2003. It is
an intimate account of the ending of Alice’s life, as seen through the
eyes and the camera of her son and primary caregiver, Peter.
“ This work began spontaneously, as a therapy for me, a coping mechanism for a relationship that had become increasingly intense and demanding of my time and emotions. The photography drew us closer together and I realized there was a story about our lives that needed to be told in words. In November I started writing footnotes, knowing they could not be completed, the story could not end, until after Alice’s death.”
“When all was over, when every word spoke the truth and there were no words that did not need to be, I closed the booklet and did not reopen it for months. Facing the reality of what I had been through, what we had been through together, was overwhelming. With time and personal growth that has changed.”
“Due to encouragement from others, including Wally and Berendina, I decided to share Alice 101 with the public, believing it will provide meaning, inspiration and purpose to those facing death and to those who are providing care and standing by.”
